Multicultural Classrooms That See in Color, and Through the Rainbow

I grappled with these questions this week, thinking of the upcoming school year and my role as a primary or Elementary School Educator here in Texas.

What can I do to address cultural differences in my student population?

  • Research demographics before the school year begins to ensure that every student is included in multicultural conversation. Some cultures may be more obscure and unusual, yet, of course, they are equally important to teach to the children as they represent a part of the class.
  • Celebrate the differences.

How will I build a supportive classroom culture that promotes multicultural awareness, acceptance, appreciation, and understanding?

  • I’d like to incorporate the use of technology, such as virtual field trips, to expose students to different cultures around the world.
  • Setting up experiential realia through experiences that relate to the cultures in the class and their traditions with parents who are willing to participate would be so good for my students.
